UAW Strikes Back: New Locations Take Aim at Detroit’s Big Three

The United Auto Workers (UAW) have announced the newest locations for their strike against Detroit’s Big Three automakers, General Motors, Ford, and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA). The strike was originally launched on September 16th and has continued over the past two months as the union attempts to iron out a new contract that includes higher wages and better working conditions. Now, UAW has revealed its newest strike locations, totaling 14 picket lines across four states, in an effort to put more pressure on the negotiating table. In Michigan, UAW picket lines are set up at 11 different sites, including GM’s Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly plant and Flint Assembly plant, Ford’s Dearborn Truck plant, and FCA’s Warren Truck plant. The union also has two picket lines set up in Toledo, Ohio, at GM Powertrain and FCA’s Toledo Machining plants. Finally, UAW has also established picket lines in Indiana at the GM Ft. Wayne Assembly plant and the Bedford Casting Operations. Through establishing the new picket lines, UAW seeks to raise awareness for the ongoing strike and the issues that are at the heart of it. “These new locations are another snapshot of the solidarity that the union is striving to maintain with the Big Three automakers,” UAW president Rory Gamble said in a statement. “For too long, far too many members have gone underpaid and without retirement security. This strike is about securing a pathway forward for our members and establishing a safe, modern, and equitable work environment across all bargaining units.” The picket lines will remain until a new agreement is reached between the union and Detroit’s Big Three that meets the demands of UAW members. Until then, the union will use these new sites to promote their mission of a better life for all auto workers.
