“Jordan’s Rejection Reveals Republican Rift: Second Speaker Vote Falters

The United States House of Representatives recently conducted a vote to elect the new Speaker of the House, an important position of leadership within the Republican party. Unfortunately, the vote was unsuccessful, as far-right members of the party blocked the election of a more moderate candidate, Representative Kevin Jordan. While the Republican Party is generally seen as unified in their support of President Trump and his agenda, this vote served to prove that the party is still deeply divided. The vote reflects a fracture between the more moderate wing of the party, and the far-right. Jordan, initially viewed as the most likely candidate to be elected as Speaker of the House, received 118 votes from his party, falling short of the 218 votes needed for a majority. In this case, the lack of a clear majority in the Republican Party prompted the near-stalemate and failure of the vote. The failure of the vote has sparked outrage from many moderate Republicans, who have called for unity in the party in order to increase their influence in the House of Representatives. A spokesperson for the Jordan campaign called the overwhelming support for another candidate “a betrayal of the ideals for which Rep. Jordan was running”. This vote emphasizes the deep divisions within the Republican Party. Democrats continue to struggle to reach a consensus on many issues, however the inability of the Republicans to select a Speaker of the House highlights the party’s own internal conflict. The failure of GOP lawmakers to pass a Speaker may only be the beginning of a series of fractures in the party, as the Trump Administration continues to push for policies that may be at odds with the long-standing, more moderate factions of the party. If the House of Representatives fails to replace the Speaker soon, it may result in even further divisions.
