“On the Attack: Trump Supporters Follow Their Leader’s Lead

In recent years, supporters of Donald Trump have made a clear pattern of engaging in degrading, demeaning, and often baseless attacks when disagreeing with someone, particularly those who oppose the current president of the United States. This behavior, as exhibited through comments, posts, and interactions on various social media, has become all too common. Unfortunately, this pattern of attackers using vulgarities, insulting language, and an apparent lack of facts to support their claims appears to follow the direction of Donald Trump’s own behavior on numerous occasions. From Twitter to the various rallies leading up to and following the 2016 election, Trump has been known to use such tactics to demean or belittle those he disagrees with. Critics point out the hypocritical nature of this behavior, as supporters of the former businessman-turned-President seemingly mimic his own. It appears that they feel that if insulting and aggressive behavior is acceptable from the President himself, that it should certainly be suits them as well. It should not, however, be taken as a sign that these Trump supporters lack intelligence or that their positions are baseless. Such attacks and insults are often used as a means of expression and as a sign of passionate devotion for the President or his ideas, and should not be taken as evidence of ill will or hatred of those with whom they disagree. Rather, what these Trump supporters have embraced is that their views are to be strongly defended, and if their opinions come under fire, there must be some form of a response, no matter how base or crude. Whether it is racism, misogyny, or any other form of bigotry-based attack, the overall conclusion is that these kinds of attacks are inexcusable, but, unfortunately, are very much apart of the current dialogue. Donald Trump and his supporters have become synonymous with these kind of verbal attacks, leading to the loud discord that has come to define much of the current political landscape. It is a sad reality, but one that is unfortunately all too real and too common in today’s world.
