Ghana is on its way to becoming a global leader in lithium production with the development of its first lithium mine. South African Atlantic Lithium Ltd. (ALL), an emerging West African lithium producer, has secured the rights to begin construction of the Kwantu Lithium Project in Ghana. The construction of the lithium mine is part of the government’s larger goal to promote the development of the local mining industry. According to ALL, the Kwantu project is “a major step forward in Ghana’s pursuit of becoming a leader in the lithium industry.” The Kwantu Lithium’s Project site is located in the Ghanaian central region. It’s spread across about 50 hectares and features three main components: an open-pit mining site, a pilot plant and a beneficiation plant. The main purpose of the mine is to extract lithium carbonate from the spodumene ore found in the region. During the construction phase, the Ghanaian government is committed to providing ALL with the resources and support necessary to successfully launch the Kwantu Lithium Project. This includes ensuring the safety of all workers on site, the unhampered access to requisite power and transport infrastructure. In addition to providing jobs for local residents, the Kwantu Lithium Project is expected to create increased economic development opportunities in the central region of Ghana. Through this lithium mine, the government hopes to achieve a “level of self-sufficiency in lithium-ion battery production” that will reduce the country’s dependence on imports. For ALL, the development of the Kwantu Lithium Project reaffirms their commitment to the African continent. In addition to the project in Ghana, ALL has recently announced a partnership with a lithium exploration project in Zambia. All of their endeavors are meant to stimulate the growth of the African lithium industry and to secure their place as a major global producer. As of now, the Kwantu Lithium Project is in the process of completion, with the first production expected later this year.
