“Proud Boy Sentenced to 3 Years for Role in Jan. 6 Riot

On January 6, 2021, a Proud Boy who cooperated with the U.S. Government following the attack on the Capitol Building was sentenced to 3 years in prison. The Proud Boy is Leo Levasseur, 28 and from Connecticut. He was associated with the self-described Proud Boys from the beginning of the organization’s existence. At a rally in the lead-up to President Donald Trump’s speech on the evening of January 6th, Levasseur was seen to be with the crowd of Trump supporters that climbed the Capitol’s walls and broke into the building. Levasseur has since then cooperated with the U.S. Government, which included supplying information about his presence and activity at the Capitol on the day of the attack. The U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia recommended that Levasseur serve three years in prison for his crimes on the day of the attack. U.S. District Judge Dabney Friedrich, agreed with the recommendation and sentenced Levasseur to three years in prison. In addition to his prison sentence,LeVasseur was also sentenced to two years of supervised release and forced to pay a $4500 fine. Levasseur did make an apology and attempted to explain his actions saying,”I acted on my beliefs that I’ve grown up with my whole life. It’s those beliefs that have lead to me being here today…I take full responsibility and ownership of my actions.” Despite his apology, Judge Friedrich stated that such attitudes could not be tolerated, and it is a priority of the U.S. Government to ensure this type of activity is held accountable.
