On Tuesday, President Joe Biden travelled to Valley Forge, Pennsylvania to deliver a sweeping speech denouncing Donald Trump’s threat to American democracy.
In his speech, the former vice president emphasized the importance of the 2020 election and its profound effect on our nation’s future. Biden drew a contrast between his administration’s vision of unity and inclusion and Trump’s brand of divisiveness and authoritarianism, berating the former president for inciting violence, attacking the media, and undermining the rule of law.
“From the day he took office,” Biden said, “Donald Trump has attacked the foundations of our democracy. He has sought to undermine the independence of our courts, the rule of our laws, freedom of the press, and the right of Americans to vote.”
The president recalled the many legal cases brought against Trump by the Supreme Court, the Ways and Means Committee, and dozens of other institutions, describing the former president as one who “appeals to fear, division and attack.”
In addition, Biden highlighted the importance of voting, calling it a “sacred right” and a “precious blessing.” He urged all Americans to get out and vote in future elections, noting that it was the only way to “ensure that no one — not Donald Trump, not the federal government, not anyone — can take away the rights, freedoms and protect our democracy.”
Biden’s address represented a strong rejection of the philosophy and policies championed by the former president, positioning himself firmly in opposition to those who would see our democracy weakened. He ended on a stirring note, asking all citizens to “respect one another and treat each other with dignity and decency.”
It is now up to the American people to ensure that Biden’s call for unity is not hijacked by those who seek to undermine our democracy. Only through our collective action can we ensure that our founding values are preserved and our nation is on the path to a brighter future.
